Shedding

The babies are almost 4 months old!  And just about done shedding their foal coats.  It has been such a fun process, the chameleon changes.

Yawns are contagious!!!!

3 months old

The babies are 3 months old and looking great.  They say at three months they are the closest proportion-wise to what they will look like as adults.  Well, I think my babies are gonna be pretty handsome!  And they are definitely built differently thanks to their very different mommas.

Catch up

Sorry for the lack of posts.  I've been busy.  In addition to working more hours, filling in at the small animal clinic one day a week, and trying to be a mom,  I've made a few new friends this summer and we've been getting out and riding our horses!  It's been really fun.

Sometimes I ride the mares, and the foals get to come out too.  It's really good exposure for them.  And my daughter has been riding Catlow as I pony her along on Cody.  So everyone has been getting out.  Denny needs more exposure to other horses in a controlled situation.  He thinks he should charge and kick at new horses that ride with his mom.  Not okay!  He's much better behaved if I lead him, so I might have to keep doing that.

I haven't been able to ride Chico.  Everytime I do, he turns up lame in the middle of the ride.  I'm not sure what his issue is, but I think it is something higher up on his left hind leg.  He currently lives in a 24-7 grazing muzzle to try to get some weight off him.  He is just such an easy keeper.  He's the only one in the whole herd.  It's been working though.  He looks better than he has in a few years.

My daughter rode Stormy in the 4th of July parade.  They both did awesome.  And so pretty decorated!

The foals are starting to shed their foal coats on their faces and ears.  I'm excited to see what their big horse colors are gonna look like!  Denny seems to be growing in a mane that looks just like Catlow's.  I was pretty sure he was going to have a flaxen mane and tail with that white muzzle he was born with.  He's shed that white muzzle now.

Enjoy the pictures!

Babies are so fun

Catlow's colt is incorrigible!  He really likes to bite necks.

This is a healing scrape on the inside of Charlie's hind leg.  The hair growing in is pitch black!  It gives a neat reminder of what color she'll be some day!

Denny's wound just keeps healing up and getting smaller.

I really want to upload some videos, but I'm not sure I'll be able to do it.

Denny's wound healing well

Took the stitches out a few days ago.   Just a few places where the wound didn't seal up right away, but it looks great!  I did not put him on any antibiotics since I caught it and stitched it up within 30 minutes of it happening.  I'm happy with it.  He's doing well.  It's not as itchy as it was at first as it heals up.

Growth spurts

Charlie is going through a growth spurt and filling out.  She's really shot up and is quite a bit taller than Denny right now.  Denny is filling out, but hasn't started to grow up yet.  Charlie has also gotten over her fear of me.  I can touch her all over and pick up her feet and finally rub her face.

Denny really thinks he's a little stallion.  So interesting to see the difference between colts and fillies, even at a young age.

They are now 1 month old and super fun!

Poor Denny

Poor Denny ran through the fence and got cut up.  Mostly one superficial cut through the skin and a nick in the first fascial layer, and a bunch of raw stretched skin.  I was able to clean the cut up and stitch him up (after sedating and numbing him).  He was a good boy and feels so sorry for himself.  He is sore.  And the tissues are starting to swell.  I'll keep him on anti-inflammatories for a bit.  He'll heal okay, but I feel so bad for him.  Silly babies just panic and can't think straight.  Charlie has run through the fence a couple times too, but hasn't gotten hurt at all.
